Over 100 years old
The history of the MS Frieda
A ship for the Kulki
From barge to excursion steamer
The MS Frieda has had an eventful history. The 53 meter long and 6 meter wide Elb-Saale barge was in service for around 50 years before it was scrapped in 1971. After unrigging, the barge was cut into three parts. In 1972, the Frieda was brought to Lake Kulkwitz, not far from the then still young Leipzig district of Grünau. Here, the individual parts found a new foundation directly on the eastern shore, were welded together again and converted into a ship’s restaurant with outdoor seating. The “MS Leipzig”, as the Frieda was now called, was officially opened at the same time as the Kulkwitzer See recreation center in 1973. From then on, the former barge served as an excursion restaurant and quickly became a landmark of the local recreation area. Thanks to the famous dancing teas and the good cuisine, the ship’s restaurant enjoyed great popularity. In some cases, Leipzig citizens waited up to two years for a reservation in the ship’s restaurant.

Changing tenants and concepts
Turnaround for the excursion destination
German reunification meant drastic changes for the popular excursion destination MS Frieda. Private owners and various leaseholders now took over the helm of the former barge. Over the years, excursionists have found a Chinese restaurant, an Italian ristorante, a pirate cog and a classic ship restaurant on the MS Frieda.
The exterior of the ship has also changed several times. After a fire in 2002, the former barge underwent major renovations, but fortunately the MS Frieda never lost its maritime character. After the last restaurant closed in 2017, the popular ship fell silent.

A place to celebrate and enjoy
New life as an event location by the lake
The former MS Frieda has been under a new flag since the beginning of 2019. The ship was in a desolate state at the time of the takeover and the upcoming investments were huge. Our team and many helpers worked hard to turn the ageing barge into a top event location.
It wasn’t always easy – the first few years of our venue were characterized by the peculiarities of the pandemic. Nevertheless, we continued to build on our ship and gradually transformed it into a beautiful, special venue for events of all kinds.
Whether it’s a wedding, company party or first day at school: enjoy your event with maritime flair by the lake!
